03/01/2007 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - A pair of Pacific Division clubs tangle tonight, when the first-place Anaheim Ducks meet the last-place Los Angeles Kings at the Staples Center.
The Ducks currently hold a five-point edge over Dallas for the lead in the Pacific and are second overall in the Western Conference. The Kings, meanwhile, remain at the very bottom of the conference standings.
Tonight's game is the seventh of eight meetings this year between the clubs. The Kings have actually won two of the last three after the Ducks took the first three games of the series this season.
Anaheim has won nine of its last 12 meetings against the Kings and has taken five straight as the visitor.
The Ducks come in on a two-game winning streak after knocking off division rival San Jose on Monday. Teemu Selanne scored the game-winning goal to give Anaheim an important 3-2 win over the Sharks.
Dustin Penner scored twice while Ryan Getzlaf added two assists for the Ducks. Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 40 shots in the win.
The Ducks won't hit the road again after tonight for some time. The club, which is 18-12-3 as the visitor this year, begins a lengthy eight-game homestand on Friday against San Jose that runs through March 18.
Anaheim didn't make any earth-shattering moves on Tuesday at the trade deadline, but did pull off a pair of deals. The Ducks acquired veteran forward Brad May from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for goaltender Michael Wall, and sent defender Joe Rullier to Tampa Bay for defenseman Doug O'Brien.
The Kings come into the game well-rested as they have been out of action since Saturday's 6-5 shootout win over Colorado. Dustin Brown scored in the sixth round of the shootout to clinch the win for Los Angeles.
Rob Blake had a goal late in the third to send the game into overtime and added an assist for the Kings, who have won two of their last three games. Sean Burke finished with 25 saves in the victory.
Tonight's game marks the third tilt of a four-game homestand for the Kings, who are 12-13-8 at home this season and conclude the stand Saturday against Nashville.
The Kings will be without captain Mattias Norstrom for tonight's game. Los Angeles traded the defenseman to Dallas, along with forward Konstantin Pushkarev and a third and fourth-round pick in 2007, for defenseman Jaroslav Modry, the rights to defenseman Johan Fransson and three draft picks.
In the deal, Los Angeles received second and third-round picks in 2007 and a 2008 first-round choice.
Los Angeles made two additional trades before the deadline, shipping defender Brent Sopel to Vancouver for a second-round pick in 2007 or 2008 and a fourth- round pick in 2008. Also, the Kings dealt right wing Jason Ward, who Los Angeles had acquired from the New York Rangers on February 5 in the Sean Avery deal, to Tampa Bay for a fifth-round selection in 2007.

Now, it's okay to call the league hypocritical when it releases injury reports, which players have told me only helps bettors. And it's okay to mutter something obscene when the league pretends gambling doesn't help drive TV ratings and fan interest and put money in owners' pockets. But when it supports other forms of gaming? Big Deal. The Bears should put an orange "C" on every deck of cards dealt at Harrah's in Joliet; the Eagles should slap their logo on roulette wheels at the Borgata in Atlantic City; the Dolphins should hold training camp at the El San Juan in Puerto Rico.
Seriously.
The NFL's problem, when it comes to the gambling world, isn't hypocrisy, it's worse: The bosses lack vision. That's why the league is picking unwinnable fights in Delaware and taking pot shots from critics after making smart sponsorship deals. Roger Goodell and his gang are acting and thinking locally rather than globally, which is rare for them, especially compared to their professional (and amateur) counterparts.
The NBA held its All Star game in Las Vegas and David Stern's kingdom didn't crumble (although the town did bring plenty of players to their knees.) I'd say it's 6 to 5 and pick 'em that Lebron will make a road swing through Sin City before his career is over.
Even the NCAA College Football Betting is more progressive on this issue than the NFL. Several years ago Rachel Newman Baker, college sports' gambling czar, opened a dialogue with Vegas bookmakers to learn about how they do business. She's visited Nevada sports books, studied their operations and listened to how they regulate action. Now she knows she can expect a call from bookmakers, who lose money when sports are fixed, if they think something sketchy is going on in NCAA games. She's not in favor of sports betting, but, as she once told me, "I know it's not going away, either."
The NFL can't seem to accept that. And until it can find peace with the idea, it'll get flack, even when it's right.
